Never forgotten | PTC(UK) Volunteers Killed in Gaza

When we see the numbers of Palestinians killed or horribly wounded (over 40,000 killed and over 94,000 wounded at time of writing) we are shocked – but it is only an intellectual shock. When we focus on the wanton destruction of one life, especially a young life full of promise which should be experiencing that unique period of joyful discoveries, we suddenly feel intense loss at the waste as well as pain and anger at the monumental injustice. Extrapolate that to the Gaza population and we have some sense of the scale of the tragedy and the shameful criminality of genocide. These are decent, resourceful, kind and sociable people, full of warmth, laughter and a love of learning. At PTC(UK), they are our family.

Two young men who volunteered to work on our Sports project have been killed.

Ahmed Al-Jadeeli, a young Gazan man from Nusierat, was born in 2002. Ahmed was a brilliant engineering student at Palestine University, known for his calmness and bright smile. Despite his busy schedule, Ahmed was a kind young man and a passionate volunteer at the Palestine Trauma Centre, where he provided psychological support to children through sports activities.

Ahmed, with his shyness and calmness, left a good impression on everyone he dealt with. He was committed to his prayers and remembrance of God, and a person dedicated to serving the children at the centre. His goal was to be part of the solution, to do something for the children who suffered from war.

Ahmed was martyred on 23/08/2024 after his house was bombed in Nusierat Refugee Camp, and he had severe injuries that later led to his death. Despite his death, Ahmed remains a symbol of a dedicated young man who gave a lot to his country and his people.

Mahmoud Al-Assar, a young man from Nusierat, was born in 2002. He lived under the harsh conditions imposed by daily life in Gaza, but he was full of hope and ambition. Mahmoud enrolled in Rebat University College and was striving to achieve his dreams of obtaining a good education and a bright future.

Mahmoud was a well-mannered, active young man who loved work and sought to succeed in life. Beside his university studies, he worked with his father to support his family and volunteered at Palestine Trauma Centre (UK). Mahmoud began volunteer work in September 2021, where he trained children in sports activities. For him it was more than just a sport, but a way to instill hope in the souls of children.

Mahmoud Al-Assar was martyred while walking in the street in June 2024 - the victim of an Israeli airstrike. Mahmoud left behind beautiful memories full of hope and high morale His name will remain engraved in the hearts of those who knew and worked with him.

We are so grateful for what Ahmed and Mahmoud have already given us. They inspire us still
